There is good news, however! In the world of art supplies, price does not always equal quality. When I first started using oils, I took the advice of a fellow artist and used Grumbacher Academy Oil Paints. Grumbacher paint is lovely in itself, but the price can be a bit steep, especially to students or artists who apply their paint thickly or work on a large scale.
It was with surprise that I came across Georgian Oil’s “Jumbo” set in a Blick store. This featured nine 120 ml tubes of paint, with the basic colors vital to any artist’s palette, such as yellow ochre, ultramarine etc. This set features a massive amount of paint, and can still be bought from Blick for around $44. In all honesty, I did not expect much from the set. After all, I had been led to believe that the very best paints were also the most expensive. Upon using the Georgian oils, however, I found them to be equal in quality if not slightly better than the Grumbacher Academy line I had been using previously.
